"I have been contacted by a significant number of people in Poland following their recent General Election result. The majority, but by no means all, suggest that there is no problem with democracy in Poland; indeed, that there were greater issues before the election of the current government. They assert that criticism of Poland in this regard is politically motivated. My position on this is clear: it is not for me, for MEPs, or the European Union, to intervene in Polish domestic politics. I am no expert on Polish domestic politics, I do not profess to be such, and it would be just as inappropriate for me to comment on the same as it would be for Polish politicians to interfere in the United Kingdom. This whole debate is therefore a nonsense and should not be taking place at all."@en1
