"Today’s vote is a welcome step towards deepening and expanding the single market. A strong digital single market brings large benefits for SMEs, consumers and to technology start-ups. Crucially I welcome the prominent role and appreciation given to Intellectual Property Rights here. Whilst the Digital Single Market is beneficial to consumers, I am pleased to see there is recognition of the work and creativity behind these products and services, and it has steered clear of upsetting business models that currently function effectively. However, I am wary of the direction and instruction this report gives to the AVMS review prior to the completion of the Commission’s REFIT exercise. Elements of the text, for example, risk chipping away at the country-of-origin principle, which would damage the very core of a directive that currently functions well for all; any move towards a country-of-destination approach is a slippery slope that we must remain alert to, particularly when we have yet to see the evidence on which to base this. The outcome of the vote is a positive step for the internal market, for consumers and for SMEs but we must remain cautious of how it is shaped in actual legislation."@en1
