"This report proposes opening up British jobs as a matter of course to continental workers through EURES. At a time of high unemployment in the UK, particularly in my constituency of North East England which has the highest unemployment anywhere in the UK, this is clearly contrary to the interests of my constituents.
Given that the majority of such positions are unskilled or semi-skilled jobs, and that the greatest shortage of jobs in my constituency lies in such sectors, the problem is far worse in the North East than elsewhere. In terms of wage compression, it is almost certain that the situation specifically in the North East must be far worse than the 1.88% drop in wages in such sectors which has recently been documented by the Bank of England.
I therefore voted against this report."@en1
