"Mr President, I am happy to support this report and the focus on young people and ensuring that they have the correct skills to gain employment. One in five of our young people are unemployed. It is higher in some countries across Europe, and yet this is not a new problem. If you look at 1995, youth unemployment was at 21% also, and that is over 20 years ago now. Today’s young people are more educated than previous generations, and yet youth unemployment continues to face challenges. Skills development has been identified in this report, and the development of relevant skills is important. The training and education sector must move and work in this area. It must move and work in conjunction with employers, in conjunction with those who need the relevant skills but who find they do not have them in the cohort of young people available to them. So we need a renewed focus, particularly on the apprenticeship model, and to bring back the apprenticeship model. There is probably too much of an emphasis on pieces of paper and third-level education in our universities that does not provide young people with the necessary skills. I welcome the changes that have happened in my own country with the education and training boards, in which employers and those providing education and training are involved, working together to ensure young people are equipped with the necessary skills."@en1
