"Women in the USA are twice as likely to be entrepreneurs as women in Great Britain. The Alan Sugar ‘you’re fired’ male boardroom culture may make good television, but for women, it doesn’t always make good business. So I conducted an open surgery, with the Essex Businesswomen’s Network, to ask what are the barriers women have to overcome to succeed in business? Some were traditional barriers to women in employment, including lack of childcare. The network was seen as invaluable to build necessary confidence. But over and over again lack of finance was cited. Jaime in Southend, told me she’d be denied a mortgage to open her own co-working centre. Home baker Sajida in St Albans, Hertfordshire, wanted to expand her business, but can’t afford the premises. Not only do women run just one-third of businesses, but those who start a business have just one-third of the cash too. Banks and other lenders must do more to support women entrepreneurs. So must Europe – when EU ‘Progress’ loans to small businesses are 50% more likely to go to men. Women at my surgery in Mark’s Tey, kept saying ‘empowerment’. I support these proposals to empower women in business."@en1
