"Mr President, I approach today’s debate and vote on promoting female entrepreneurship with a renewed sense of what is possible. In my constituency, Northern Ireland, we have a new, female First Minister. This is not only a first for our region of the United Kingdom, but also for my party, as Arlene Foster has now been elected leader as well. This is a huge step in the right direction.
However, Arlene is not a success story for those who advocate bringing change by imposing gender quotas, mainstreaming, or simply handing women opportunities as a principle in and of itself. Instead, she is an example of a woman with rural roots who has worked hard and risen to where she is today on the back of hard work, and who has demonstrated ability and steely determination to succeed for those she represents.
Therefore, to the authors of this report my message is clear: yes, I support your aim to break down all forms of barriers to women entering the workplace; yes, I, too, want to remove obstacles to women accessing education and training, and yes, I want to give women in our society a base from which to display their entrepreneurial skills. However, I do not agree with quotas or any form of monitoring that redirects the emphasis from progress."@en1
