"This is a debate between those who seem to think cultural diversity is a threat, and the rest of us who celebrate it. To win the argument for mutual understanding, respect, indeed celebration, we need dialogue. That is why we endorse the Paris Declaration commitments to prevent and tackle marginalisation, racism and radicalisation, and recognise the need for inclusive learning to promote integration.
An example of this is shown by my recent visit to ‘Fresh Beginnings’, a refugee support centre within my own constituency in Colchester. The support being given to help refugees integrate into the North Essex community ranged from free English lessons to volunteers coming in to break down barriers. What I saw in Colchester provides a much better lesson than what we witnessed in Cologne. I have sought to support similar initiatives throughout my constituency including ‘Luton in Harmony’ and the Stevenage World Forum.
So let us see more such initiatives, by supporting the concrete recommendations for action at all governmental levels, contained in today’s report. I am proud the report was written by my British Labour MEP colleague. She is right to conclude that this is the means to create strong and cohesive communities."@en1
