"Whilst much of this report refers to matters which everyone can agree on – for example, suggesting that we need greater understanding between different cultures – the remedies proposed for this situation will be a hindrance rather than a help. In the United Kingdom, education should always be politically neutral. This is enshrined in law under the Education Act of 1996. Therefore I am most concerned by calls for further EU involvement in our education system. Furthermore, the report frequently calls for taxpayers’ money to be spent on various initiatives. Yet far from strengthening the genuine national and local cultures which are so vibrant across Europe, it would rather foster a non-existent ‘European culture’, forgetting rather conveniently that almost half of all European countries are not even members of the European Union!"@en1
