"Yesterday, Tata Steel UK announced the loss of over 1 000 jobs in its UK steel manufacturing facilities, including in Hartlepool. My thoughts have been with those affected by this decision. They find themselves in the same situation as the thousands of jobs lost in this sector during the last quarter of 2015, including in Redcar at SSI. On 24 November 2016, the Commission responded to my written question on state aid rules, clearly stating that ‘under EU State aid rules, the steel sector can benefit from several categories of aid: R&D and innovation, training, employment and environmental aid can thus contribute to long-term competitiveness of the sector. Moreover Member States can also mitigate the effect of higher electricity prices to the sector induced by the EU emissions trading scheme.’ The UK steel industry is in free-fall, the UK Government is refusing to pull the parachute open, and soon our entire industry will be irreparably damaged. That is why I submitted an amendment to today’s annual report on EU Competition Policy calling for Europe-wide action to tackle the crisis in the steel sector. I am delighted that this amendment and the report gained broad support. No more talk: we need concrete action to Save Our Steel."@en1
