"Mr President, this report has covered a wide range of things linked to competition policy in its broadest sense and there is one issue which is highly topical at the moment, which is the competition faced in our steel sector by what looks like dumping from Chinese steel producers and which is, of course, a competition matter as well as a trade matter. The Commission some time ago proposed to strengthen our defence measures when facing a situation like this but, lo and behold, which is one of the countries that has been blocking that in the Council, which has been holding it up, which has been preventing us from taking more effective action? Why, the United Kingdom! The British Conservative Government is one of the culprits in allowing this situation to arise, without strengthening our hand in dealing with a situation like this.
That compounds their failure to take action nationally, which they, like other governments, could have done within the competition rules of the Treaty. They have failed to do so, and some of them seem tempted from time to time to do what they always do, which is to blame Brussels."@en1
