"Mr President, there is no doubt about it: start-up after start-up, idea after idea, app after app, the digital sector is becoming more and more prominent in our lives, but we have not kept pace with it. In fact, it is 22 years since Amazon was set up, 18 years since Google, and 12 years since Facebook, and yet it is only now that we are really getting down to the business of trying to complete the Digital Single Market. It is no wonder that we are well behind the United States and Asia, but it is better late than never. The important point now is that we do so rapidly, but also extensively, and get it right, because 28 different markets are not going to suffice anymore. We have to harmonise what can be harmonised and look particularly at issues like geo—blocking, which is holding up a lot of development. We also have to look very carefully at bringing consumers with us. That is why I welcome the Data Protection Regulation, for which I was honoured to be rapporteur for the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) and part of the trilogues. That should now give consumers trust that their data is safe, that they are in control of it, and also of course to allow start—ups to develop and businesses to grow in Europe. The Digital Single Market, if we get it right, is estimated to make EUR 415 billion for the European economy. That is a lot of money in any man’s language, and certainly it requires us to make sure that we work hard and ensure that we get the Digital Market complete so that we will once again be the most competitive in the world."@en1
