"Mr President, there are elements in these proposals which will be popular with voters – I should certainly be very pleased if I could access the BBC’s iPlayer service while I am in Brussels and Strasbourg – but we must bear in mind that if we dismantle existing copyright arrangements we may deny media companies the resources they need to produce the new content that viewers also want.
We in my party are concerned that the Commission’s inflexible top-down model of regulation is inimical to innovation and too often fails to meet the needs of individual Member States. We recognise that a degree of cross-border coordination is required to ensure that the internet and digital communications work efficiently across Europe, but we believe that such coordination would best be achieved by independent nations cooperating and negotiating with each other, rather than by the EU’s central planning approach. As several colleagues have said, what we actually need is a global – not merely a European – solution."@en1
