"Mr President, the digital revolution is here. It will transform every aspect of life in the same way the agricultural and industrial revolution transformed life before it. It will change the way we work, play and live, but to take advantage of it we need to recognise that we have a global market of 3 billion connected people. This is not about a European internal market; it is about a global market and therefore we should not be putting up new barriers. For example, this debate is streamed all over the world, yet content we buy online is blocked. Technologically, this is nonsense as you have to add something to the internet in order to block it. It feeds piracy and consumers do not understand it. Therefore I welcome the portability proposals, but we do not need pan—European licences. We also need to support the sharing economy. People want to share. Let us let them share and build businesses which can go global, but let us be clear: for digital to work it needs to disrupt and challenge existing business models and vested interests. We should embrace and welcome this. The internet is global by default. Let us not cut Europe off: whether it is in cloud security, data or digital content or the sharing economy, the digital tsunami is coming. Let us embrace it."@en1
