"Mr President, youth unemployment across Europe is a long-term time bomb, damaging individuals and society for years to come. Eradicating youth unemployment should be at the heart of our economic and industrial policies, and there is no excuse for sacrificing our young people. My home region, the North-East of England, has some of the highest youth unemployment figures in the UK, and as a result we qualify for extra funds from the EU Youth Employment Initiative. EU funds and the ideas in this report can support falling youth unemployment by creating opportunities for our young people, and certainly training, good apprenticeships and investment in education are crucial. But we should avoid demonising our young. It is a lack of decent jobs which needs to be addressed. For many more young people, it is not skills but breaking the cycle of precarious temporary jobs that is needed. Youth employment measures should create good jobs. Low pay, exploitation and zero hours contracts are creating a new social time bomb. We must act to deactivate it if we want to activate our young for the future."@en1
