"Hundreds killed or arrested, thousands internally displaced, 250 000 in refugee camps in the region. This is the consequence of President Nkurunziza putting personal gain over people’s interest, and the opposition doing the same in its response to the crisis. Meanwhile, a lack of disarmament following past conflicts, combined with attempts to manipulate ethnic fault lines, risks leading to another civil war.
What we need is an African solution that will be a sustainable one, but I am concerned about the lack of unity and vision displayed by the African Union and East African community in terms of mediation efforts, especially given the fragile stability of the entire Great Lakes region which is closely interlinked. That is why I support the call made by Burundian human rights activist Pierre-Claver Mbonimpa – himself a victim of repression in the country – for the EU to decisively leverage its financial influence to put pressure on major actors in Burundi and the wider region to convene an inclusive dialogue."@en1
