"I voted in favour of this resolution and moreover, prior to this resolution, I supported the open letter, prepared by the Parliamentarians for Global Action together with FIDH, to support Human Rights Defenders in Burundi, who have been systematically targeted in the past months by both the government and armed forces. The actions of the Burundian Government are reprehensible. They have responded to public protests with extremely repressive measures, including extra-judicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on freedom of expression.
It is estimated that 230 000 people have fled to neighbouring countries. It is further reported that 87 people were killed following attacks on three military bases in the capital, Bujumbura, only last week. Some of the victims appear to have been shot in reprisals carried out by the security forces.
I and my Sinn Féin colleagues are deeply concerned about the ongoing violence and human rights violations in Burundi, and I will continue to use my role as a Member of Parliament to ensure that this matter is brought to the attention of the international community."@en1
