"I voted in favour of the annual report on human rights and democracy in the world for 2014 which gives an overview of the global situation regarding human rights and had some very positive provisions such as support for the systematic introduction of human rights clauses in all international agreements between the EU and third countries, the need for a comprehensive human rights-based approach to migration, and the need to tackle the root causes of migration by addressing the external dimension of the refugee crisis, opposition to the death penalty, support for LGBTI people and the mainstreaming of gender equality. Regarding one area on the rights of women and girls, the issue of surrogacy is grey rather than black and white with varying situations and degrees of protection around the world. Therefore while I did not vote to condemn the practice or prohibit it as a matter of human rights as many couples with fertility issues benefit from the practice with consenting women, there is an issue concerning the exploitation of vulnerable women in developing countries which needs to be examined further, hence my differing votes on these sections."@en1
