"Together with other MEPs, our request to set up a Committee of Inquiry to probe into the automobile industry’s illegal practices was accepted and I am very pleased that Parliament voted in favour of this. On Monday, I voted in the Environment Committee to reject lax ‘real driving emissions’ standards for measuring compliance with EU car pollution limits. My political group had vowed to veto the proposals in a letter to the EU Environment Ministers, criticising the Commission and the Council of EU Ministers for the technical proposals on driving emissions tests, diluting the decade-old Euro 6 standards. We cannot fail to take action on foot of a scandal with serious impact on respiratory health, the environment and corporate governance at the heart of Europe. If we just pay lip service to the principles we are supposed to uphold, we will be validating our citizens’ fears of regulatory capture of our institutions by big corporations. The EU automobile industry cannot be allowed to keep dictating the main thrust of public policies that affect these industrial giants, to the detriment of our citizens’ health and the environment."@en1
