"Mr President, as a member of the ASEAN Delegation, I am well aware of the growing trade relations between the EU and Malaysia. Indeed, it is second only to trade with Singapore. But while trade is improving, the opportunities within Malaysia for free speech and freedom of expression are deteriorating. Particularly worrying is their strengthening of their sedition law. Instead of repealing it, as previously announced, they have strengthened it. This has had serious implications for freedom of expression, with several people arrested, charged or investigated as a result of this. This is not acceptable. They have also taken for themselves the power to declare a state of emergency if they feel it is warranted, and the treatment of LGBTI people is ridiculous. At a time when we are moving in the opposite direction – even in my own country – and giving them equal rights in all facets of life, it is unacceptable that a growing trading partner of ours is moving in the opposite direction. We have to address these things in our relations with Malaysia."@en1
