"Madam President, as we mark the 20th anniversary of the peace agreement, we must acknowledge that, beyond formal diplomacy, real peace is built by real people and engaged communities. Having listened to the debate, I believe several crucial elements are missing. Firstly, we must remember the important role of grassroots civil society in the process of peace-building and reconciliation. We must also acknowledge how disenchanted Bosnian young people are with both politics and politicians, and how absolutely crucial youth participation is to the country’s future. Bosnian young people need to be actively engaged. As proved by the Complete Freedom of Truth, a project that won this year’s European Citizens’ Prize, cultural activists, artists, writers and academics all have a role in building cultural dialogue and exchange. There must be significant investment in education for democracy, fundamental rights and citizenship in Bosnia. My S&D Group colleagues and I put these points into our resolution and I deeply regret that they were removed from the joint draft."@en1
