"Asylum seekers are forced to flee their homes in hope of a better future, only to end up in detention centres which are severely overcrowded with appalling living conditions, offering inappropriate shelter. The lack of information about people’s cases and the lengthy application process leads to people being detained endlessly. Conditions and safeguards available to detainees who have committed no crime are, in many cases, worse than those of criminal detainees. Their plight is moreover aggravated by the numerous incidents wherein officers have abused their existing powers and used excessive force against detainees. All this has a negative impact on their well-being, especially after the hardship endured during their journey. We should better protect against unjust and abusive treatment in detention facilities, as well as other human rights violations. While promoting human rights, we in Europe must ensure that we ourselves reflect the very values we seek to promote globally."@en1
