"The base metals that this report deals with are aluminium, copper, steel and zinc, which are necessary for industrial growth across Europe. Currently, the EU is massively dependent on imports and this report seeks to develop not only a competitive base-metals industry in Europe, but a sustainable one.
People who are working in the steel industry – or related industries – in the UK and elsewhere in the EU are losing their jobs. I will strongly defend the jobs which are affected by the collapse of the steel industry in the West Midlands and I will work together at EU level so that we can put pressure on the Chinese Government over the dumping of steel. We need a European solution to these problems and if the existing system of free allowances of carbon emissions fails to address the issue of carbon leakage, we will need to examine the option of carbon border adjustment mechanisms linked to the ETS as a last resort.
I will continue to work on this issue and call on the UK Government to take strong and effective action to support the steel industry and combat job losses in the sector as well as related sectors."@en1
