"I abstained on this report which was aimed at developing a sustainable European base metals industry. The base metals sector is one that is facing many difficulties in Europe at the moment due to competition and a fall in demand. Furthermore, multinational companies have taken advantage of lower social and environmental standards to shift production to countries outside of Europe, resulting in huge job losses on the continent.
While I could see good aspects of the report which were aimed at improving the social and employment aspects of the base metal sector, I could not support this report for its weaknesses on environmental issues. Parts of the report sought to blame regulations put in place to save the environment for the choice of these multinationals so move elsewhere. For these reasons, I chose to abstain."@en1
