"I was shadow rapporteur of this report and I was proactively involved in seeking to improve the text. I tabled over 30 amendments in order to improve the content of the report and to protect the interests of the Irish people.
However, whilst I recognise that there were a number of positive aspects of this report, specifically the focus on tax transparency and the need to address tax avoidance tools such as ‘Patent Boxes’, I am fundamentally concerned that the intention behind this report is to introduce tax harmonisation across Europe.
It is absolutely and fundamentally the right of the government of each Member State to legislate in the best interests of their citizens, particularly in the matter of direct taxation. The intention behind this report has always been to introduce a single legislative proposal for a mandatory Common Consolidated Corporate Tax Base (CCCTB).
My mandate on the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee is to put the interests of Irish citizens first and foremost and that it does not serve their interests to have our sovereignty relinquished through any attempted tax harmonisation.
Therefore, I voted against this report and will do on any similar assaults on our economic sovereignty."@en1
