"Invasive species are undoubtedly an increasing problem in our globalised world, threatening biodiversity and costing the EU economy an estimated EUR 12 billion a year. However, I have deep concerns about whether this list of 37 species is going to help EU Member States tackle invasive species in a focused and proportionate way.
The list has some key omissions, including Japanese Knotweed, one of the most destructive and problematic invasive species on the continent, and takes in some harmless plants and animals which could lead to significant costs. Plant sellers and pet keepers across my constituency of the West Midlands have contacted me, concerned about this list and the inclusion of species such as raccoons and water hyacinth, extremely popular with UK pond owners and sold for decades without any problems. Such shortcomings, and a lack of recognition of climate variation within the EU risk undermining the very purpose of the Basic Act on Invasive Species."@en1
