"Mr President, today the longest interconnector in Europe is being designed, between south-east Northumberland and Norway. Using a sub-sea cable, energy generated from renewable sources will be transferred between our countries, and it is a blueprint for Europe on how renewables can be traded as part of the Energy Union. The proposed Energy Union offers key opportunities for us in the North—East, firstly because we have the manufacturing knowhow needed to deliver from oil and gas industries to renewables, and secondly because we understand the North Sea.
But funding new low-carbon technologies such as carbon capture storage is crucial if we want to meet our climate and energy commitments, particularly those taken in Paris last week: projects like the Teesside Collective. George Osborne’s slashing of national renewables in CCS funding represents short—termism incarnate. Energy Union is the opposite. It is about investment and jobs long-term, and that is why I supported the reports today."@en1
