"I very much welcome the opportunity to address what is a very important issue for consumers and businesses across Europe. Making better connections in terms of energy supply and innovative storage solutions holds inherent benefits for a higher quality of life and economic prosperity within societies across the Member States. There are, however, several factors that I feel we should keep in mind at this time. First of all, I would caution against an expansion of energy resources to Eastern Europe and our external neighbours before proper attention has been given to solidifying our own market. For instance, in my own constituency, we see very much a rural-urban divide. There are agri-food businesses based in the west of the province that stand to bring growth to the local economy, however are not able to access affordable energy or connect to the grid for electricity or wind power. The EU has a role to play in this sense, and I would urge the institutions to continue to support the PCIs that have been selected in the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland to help meet these challenges."@en1
