"Mr President, I voted in favour of Amendment 59 because I believe that hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is not a technology we should be pursuing at European level. Apart from anything else, we have just concluded a climate deal in Paris which seeks to limit CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. So it seems to me, therefore, nonsensical to want to invest in new technology to extract fossil fuels by fracking. Apart from the public health and the environmental risks such as possible leakage of methane, further production of CO2 and the possible leakage of benzene into watercourses, it seems to me that, from an economic perspective, fracking is no longer promising. Indeed I wonder if it ever was, even in the US.
Finally, I want to say that I fully recognise and support that the energy mix for any Member State is primarily a matter for that Member State. But it is my strongly-held view that, from an environmental and public health perspective, and now an economic perspective, fracking should not be part of our energy mix in the EU."@en1
