"Mr President, with the BRICS Development Bank and the AIIB, Beijing is driving the reshaping of global governance. Yet we do not have a strong common approach to promoting the European strategic interest. There is none for the South China Sea, where tensions threaten to undermine security and destabilise key trade routes; none for the Chinese ‘One Belt, One Road’ plan, which offers important grounds for cooperation on investment. Meanwhile, China is focusing negotiations with Central and Eastern European countries on the 16 + 1 framework, which risks weakening the interests of the EU Member States that are not involved. Minister Schmit, how are we ensuring that our neighbourhood policy is strengthened rather than undermined by Chinese investment initiatives in this region? The recent impact of China’s Black Monday on the stock market and the impact on our industry of Chinese dumping, not least in the UK steel sector, show that its financial economic policies should also be put on our radar."@en1
