"Madam President, it is great to be taking part in this debate in the atmosphere we have now as opposed to four or five years ago. The feeling is that the recession is behind us, matters have stabilised and we are on an upward trajectory. Obviously to keep that going we have to complete the EMU, and the CMU and banking union are vital parts of that architecture. As has been mentioned, structural reforms at Member State level are also vital. In my own country, we were one of worst affected by the crisis: we had to enter a bailout; we had to take tough decisions; the government had to take a lot of criticism; and the Irish people had to make many sacrifices. But now we are, as a result, the fastest growing economy in Europe. So that means that it is important for every Member State to abide by the rules agreed and especially in relation to the Stability and Growth Pact. If one Member State gets away with breaking these rules again, the whole thing will unravel and we would be back to square one. So abiding by the rules and implementing them is vital."@en1
