"Mr President, the ECR supports strong EU relations with China as one of the UN Security Council ‘Permanent Five’ and a strategic and global actor. Recently President Xi visited the UK on a state visit, and he was accorded the highest honours as a mark of how important the bilateral relationship is. Nevertheless, I have been a long-standing critic of the lack of human rights in China. I criticised the bullying of peaceful democratic Taiwan through its exclusion from all international organisations. I criticised the repression of peaceful Tibetan culture, the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners and other religious minorities, and the widespread censorship of the media, including Google, as well as military expansion in the China Seas. I also condemned the widespread use of the death sentence for lesser crimes such as economic subversion and pimping, believe it or not. We cannot ignore the importance of the People’s Republic of China but must never lose sight of the fact that it is a one-party communist dictatorship. The EU has much more in common with democratic India, so more needs to be done to enhance our partnership with it."@en1
