"Madam President, last week we celebrated the International Day of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The preamble to this states clearly: ‘recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world’. Indeed, we expect all Member States to abide by that in all their dealings, and rightly so.
When there are breaches of human rights we often debate them here in Parliament, particularly on Thursdays in the urgent debates. I take part in these every week, and this week, for the first time, there will be one relating to a citizen from my own country: a young man who celebrated his 20th birthday at the weekend. Unfortunately it was his 850th night in prison in Egypt. He was caught up as a 17-year-old in the protests there a few years ago and is awaiting trial.
So we hope, with the support of all Members of the House, to get a resolution to this and to get him returned to his family in Ireland."@en1
