"Mr President, I would like to thank Mr Arias Cañete, whose resemblance to Father Christmas has not gone amiss here today. Mr Arias Cañete, you are bringing to us gifts from Paris and I think that should be in the forefront of all our minds. What we have seen in Paris is perhaps more important because of the ambition it represents: 1.5°C as an ambition is significant. What does it mean for us now? We must do some of the underpinning research and understand the implications for all our policies; not just those on the Union, but across every single one of our targets. We need to look at what that ambition can represent and should represent. I should pay tribute to my colleague, Mr Gróbarczyk, who has gone back to Poland to work on fisheries, the poor bugger. It will be more difficult working on fisheries than energy, I suspect. The reality, however, is that the Energy Union must be the beating heart of the European continent. If it is, we can make significant progress. Right now, by combining each of our states’ ambitions we can interlink and we can make that difference happen. Interconnectivity is important and we must make sure that it actually works. I believe the North Sea is a place where we can see that ambition in reality and I will push again, Mr Arias Cañete, for you to realise that the North Sea is good to go and ready to go. Let us interlink that basin and let us see that progress in reality. Let it be a beacon for the rest of the EU so that we can make some substantial progress. I think that should be our next, and perhaps most important step."@en1
