"This was a positive report which contained a number of progressive provisions. It discusses the need for, and ways to reduce conventional car use, carbon emissions and air pollution in European cities by promoting public transport without imposing solutions on Member States. There were some provisions contained within which I was concerned with. For example, I voted against point 48 which endorsed road toll booth charges. I also voted against point 47 which endorsed the ‘polluter pays’ principle in individual car use. Sinn Fein policy supports the ‘polluter pays’ principle for major polluters but not in consumer taxes, for example the Irish carbon tax. However, as this was a progressive report with an important intention, I voted in favour of this report."@en1
