"Mr President, as Members of this Parliament know, the British Conservative Government has called a referendum on our continued membership of the European Union. In a recent article in the Stuart Rose, the former head of Marks and Spencer, called on British business not to stay silent in the EU referendum debate. Alas, this seems to be exactly what many are doing. So I would like to take this opportunity to say to the business community: don’t wait for permission from David Cameron before you discuss and make your views clear. Speak out now on our membership of the European Union. But not just the business sector. We also need to call on the voluntary sector to speak out. Don’t become the silent sector, instead discuss and speak out. And to the churches: don’t hide behind the offer to facilitate the debate on our EU membership. Take a view, speak out, defend the peace created between European nations that once fought each other. In the context of our membership of the European Union, silence is not golden. Silence in a democracy is an abdication of responsibility. Don’t abdicate; engage, speak out."@en1
