"Madam President, as COP 21 is taking place – and I am very pleased that I will be one of those representing Parliament there next week – the discussions we are having today are very relevant. Firstly, we had a very good discussion on the Circular Economy, and now we are discussing sustainable urban mobility. Obviously, with 80% of people living in urban areas, this is a vital topic. In fairness, many citizens are now becoming more and more aware of the need to decarbonise as much as possible. In urban areas especially, we can do an awful lot.
I would like to compliment particular groups in my own country, like the Tidy Towns Committees, which have done a tremendous amount in terms of cleaning up the town, ensuring walkways, cycle lanes, etc. However, some of that is outside their control and we have to do an awful lot, particularly in the area of transport. We need bypasses in towns to keep traffic that does not necessarily have to go through the town out of the town and to give the town back to its citizens, in particular, so that they can have a good quality of life."@en1
