"Madam President, thank you very much for the opportunity to speak on this. The circular economy has to be about more than legislation and about more than just talking about the circular economy. The circular economy has to be about the way you live your life. You have got to live it, and if you want this to happen, one of the first things you do if you want to make something happen is you lead by example.
Now we have got to ask ourselves in here: ‘are we leading by example?’ Are we following the three Rs: recycling, reducing, etc.? Well, we are not. You look at the fact that the water the MEPs drink in here is out of plastic bottles: whatever happened to a water font? We look at the coffee machines: we have cartridges there that are virtually impossible to recycle. Whatever happened to a jar of coffee and a spoon, or is it not good enough for you? We travel up and down to Strasbourg – have you ever heard of ‘reduce’? A good way to reduce it would be to cut out that complete and utter codology. I go to committee meetings – and remember we are asking people to follow us – reams of paperwork! Have you ever heard of e-mail? Lead by example, otherwise forget it!"@en1
