"The deal reached between EU Member States and Turkey in a bid to weaken the refugee inflow starkly contrasts in both speed and magnitude with the decision making on the management of the refugee crisis inside the EU. While Member States are dragging their feet on honouring funding pledges to manage the refugee crisis, EUR 3 billion has been promised to Turkey in return for its help on sheltering refugees. I acknowledge the need for engaging with Turkey to bring peace and stability to our neighbourhood, but we cannot undermine our enlargement policy by trading off commitments on accession negotiations and visa liberalisation against Turkey’s willingness to carry a bigger burden on migration. Especially not if this means remaining silent on the violation of human rights and freedom of speech in the country, and on the way in which the Turkish government appears to be instrumentalising conflicts in the region to settle matters with the Kurds. There is a thin line between engaging with a country in order to encourage it to do the right thing, and simply buying its cooperation while closing one’s eyes to injustice."@en1
