"I voted in favour of this motion for a resolution, which was aimed at ensuring that children living in conflict-areas have access to education.
It is truly disturbing that close to one billion children – 250 million are under the age of five – find it difficult to access education because of living in a conflict or other emergency situation.
Given our own history of conflict in Ireland and given the crucial importance that young people can play in post-conflict stability when equipped with the necessary skills, this was a particularly important resolution.
If young people are not provided with the necessary opportunities and education this increases the risks of social upheavals or slipping back into a vicious cycle of violence. A proven way of counteracting any such vacuum is through a concentrated focus on education."@en1
