lpv:spoken text	"Animal welfare is a crucial issue for the European Union and I have worked hard to ensure high standards are upheld. The health of livestock is essential for the success of European farming and will help maintain a good base of food production here in the EU. In addition, mistreatment of animals must be prevented and care standards must be maintained, and indeed improved. I, therefore, support an update of the EU’s Animal Welfare Strategy. However, this motion for a resolution that was presented does not offer an effective path going forward. It is more important to enforce the existing animal welfare strategy than to introduce a whole raft of new measures. In summary, I fully support the EU having an animal welfare strategy for 2016-2020, but I do not feel that the joint motion for a resolution calls for the right approach and I therefore chose to abstain from this vote."@en1
