lpv:spoken text	"I voted in favour of this strategy which calls on the Commission to draw up a new animal welfare strategy for the period 2016-2020. It also asks the Commission to implement outstanding points from the current strategy and for further evaluation of the 2012-2015 strategy. The joint resolution which was eventually adopted was a result of inter-party negotiations in the days leading up to the vote and was balanced in calling for ambitious new policy instruments where scientific evidence demonstrates welfare problems, while also recognising that the level of animal welfare in the European Union is among the highest in the world. There were certain amendments which I could not support, including those which would have detracted payments from existing schemes for farmers who are already struggling to make ends meet. But also some amendments which I could support including those to combat the illegal wildlife trade and illegal bird hunting. Overall, I chose to support this strategy which was good from the point of view of asking the Commission to ensure an ambitious updated and comprehensive legislative framework."@en1
