"I abstained on this resolution which is an accompanying resolution for a vote due to take place next year on the accession of Ecuador to the Columbia-Peru Free Trade Agreement. The resolution sets out Parliament’s demands to be addressed prior to giving consent next year.
Positive aspects of the resolution include calling on the Ecuadorian Government to combat poverty, protect indigenous tribes, cooperate on specific environmental and deforestation programmes, recognise fair trade, and further principles of democracy and human rights. It also calls for a reflection and reassessment of the current Columbia-Peru Agreement before adding Ecuador as a partner.
Despite these positive aspects and attempts by myself to amend certain paragraphs, the text that was eventually adopted included wording that called for the ‘quick and complete entry into force and implementation of the agreement’, thereby negating the call for reflection on aspects of the Agreement dealing with labour rights, sustainable development, the environment, etc. For this reason I could not support the resolution."@en1
