"This resolution was another worrying attempt towards a regressive trade agenda. As an MEP, I have been closely monitoring a number of trade agreements including TTIP, TiSA and CETA. The common thread running through these agreements is an aggressive attempt to call for further liberalisation, even though the disadvantages of liberalisation have become clear in many economic sectors – particularly in the financial sector.
The Doha Development Agenda talks, which were set up with the original intention of improving trade for developing countries, have been predictably dominated by industrialised countries instead. WTO actions should be able to contribute to achieving the recently adopted sustainable development goals instead of solely pushing trade liberalisation. Increasing trade for its own sake is not enough – trade must be fair if it is to lift people out of poverty. It was for these reasons that I voted against this resolution."@en1
