"Madam President, obviously we are right to absolutely condemn the acts of Islamist extremists who have carried out brutal murders against bloggers and journalists, etc. This is particularly regrettable, because Bangladesh itself signed up to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in 2000. For some, freedom of expression, which is guaranteed in that, is not really worth the paper it is written on. In particular, the country itself has an Information and Communication Technology Act, which criminalises defamatory anti-state publications and which is often used as a kind of ‘catch all’ to stop opposition to government. Journalists, bloggers and writers have been targeted, and I think it is only right we should call on the authorities to drop charges against journalists and writers for merely expressing their opinion."@en1
