"Mr President, we are the generation who grew up in a post-war Europe. It was a Europe that fed a starving population, a Europe that won the Cold War and a Europe that successfully reunited a broken continent. But our children will grow up in a totally different Europe, a Europe that will have to confront a completely different set of challenges. The shift of economic power, West to East; the consequence of climate change, of global mass migration; and the rise of fundamentalist Islam: these are next-generation issues, for which Europe will have to find next-generation solutions. Valletta was a good start. But it is just that, only a start. History offers us two lessons here. First, turning the clock back, or retreating into isolation, was never the answer. Second, when the really big challenges come along, European nations are so much more effective when they confront them together, rather than alone."@en1
