"Mr President, well I do not know about the rest of you, but the conclusions from the Summit did not fill me with optimism at all. Were they the best that they could come up with? When I read through the conclusions I must say I despaired – and how dare me, with the life that I have. Throw a few jobs and scholars at the people who are being persecuted – to entice them to stay in conflict zones? To try and help to stop the flow of irregular migration, what we need are immediate, meaningful steps to address the humanitarian crisis at Europe’s borders. The people fleeing these conflicts and oppression from Libya, from Eritrea, from Yemen, are not ʽirregularʼ anything. They are not migrants. They are desperate human beings attempting to escape the horrors of war. They are refugees that need safe and legal access and routes. They are refugees who need their fundamental rights, and freedom, and dignity protected by the EU. The scenes of a 3-year-old boy, washed up on a beach like a wave – he should never have been found dead on a beach. He should have been playing on a beach, and we should never forget that image. Therefore, it is up to us, and we have a responsibility and a duty to do much, much more. Those conclusions were absolutely shameful! Disgraceful! We should all hang our heads in shame if that is what we are recommending to address this awful problem."@en1
