"I supported this report because a united EU approach is needed to be effective in combating the threat posed by radicalised EU citizens who may move freely around the European Union. It is now estimated that over 5 000 EU citizens have left to fight for terrorist organisations in Iraq and Syria, and intelligent services warn on the major challenge and threat posed by their return to the EU in particular given the latest developments in Syria. This report proposes recommendations on a EU strategy to prevent the radicalisation and recruitment of EU citizens. It focuses on factors such as; recruitment on the internet, radicalisation in prisons, measures to be taken through education and awareness campaign and the need for exchange of information between Member states among other proposals. Preventing the radicalisation and recruitment of EU citizens is an urgent necessity to overcome these terrorist organizations and in order to restore safety within the EU."@en1
