"Mr President, the 1996 Education Act in the United Kingdom requires that schools teach from a politically-neutral perspective. I have a concern specifically on this report where an amendment was passed after paragraph 25, I believe, which states that it is Member States’ duty to guarantee that their education systems respect and promote EU values and principles.
I do not see it as being the responsibility of the British Government to politicise our education system in this way. I believe that fundamentally, what education should be about is teaching children and giving them the skills to think for themselves, not telling them what to think. For that reason, as well as various others which will, I am sure, be articulated by my colleagues, I felt it necessary to vote against this report."@en1
