"Mr President, I supported this report because I strongly believe radicalisation is one of the major challenges we are facing. Over 5 000 EU citizens have left to fight for terrorist organisations in Iraq and Syria. We cannot continue to run behind the facts, whether it is radicalisation in the UK, in Belgium or in France or the rest of the EU.
We have to look at prevention, and it is clear that EU action has important added value when it comes to curbing radicalisation, and given that this is an issue that does not stop at national borders – think about social media giving a platform to those manipulating individuals in such a way that they radicalise in total isolation from the rest of the society. It is an issue that Member States are not able to address effectively by themselves, but where the EU can. It is key that we work together to find real solutions without compromising our civil liberties and cracking down on fundamental rights."@en1
