"I am proud to be a supporter of the Tax Justice campaign and, as this Parliament’s longstanding rapporteur on Corporate Social Responsibility, have always argued that the fair payment of tax and transparent reporting of doing so is an integral obligation for responsible business. Corporate tax evasion costs the UK GBP 9 billion a year, with small and medium sized businesses paying 30% more tax than their multinational counterparts. This is unfair and wrong. I am proud to have helped win European rules requiring transparent payments by extractive companies, and hope today’s vote will be a staging post towards establishing full country-by-country reporting for corporate tax payments, which the European Council has promised. I am very disappointed that one of the Conservative MEPs for my own East of England constituency voted against today’s measures. He should explain why our small businesses have to pay taxes that big business doesn't; and why his party which says it is pro-business refuses to back action which creates a fairer business environment for all?"@en1
